Obituary for Reuben Locke

Mr. Reuben Martin Locke, 84, of Mercersburg, PA, passed away Monday, October 2, at the home of his stepdaughter, Janet Peden and her family, where he resided for 17 years. Born on Feb. 9, 1933, in Lemasters, PA, he was a son of H. Wayne and Mildred Locke. Reuben is survived by his wife of 33 years, Virginia (Ginny) Day Locke.

After graduation, Reuben proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War era. He then returned to farming in the Mercersburg and Frederick, MD areas, where he dairy and crop farmed for almost 50 years. He enjoyed spending time at the cabin of his good friend, Jay Royer. He was an avid sports fan, and he loved attending local dirt track racing with his family. He had a huge heart and was known for his wit and fun sense of humor. Though Reuben had several major health issues this year, he always faced each challenge with his customary “thumbs up” and a smile; he was an inspiration to so many, and he will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife Ginny, Reuben is survived by his children Roger Locke and wife Angelia; Tammy Tyeryar and husband David; and Darrell Locke and wife Melinda. He also leaves behind his stepchildren Janet Peden and husband Tom; Michael Lease; Jennifer Kelley and husband Charlie; and Wayne Lease and wife Nicole. He was grandfather and special “Pappy” to Sarah Peden; and Jenny Hershey and husband Tyler and their daughter Addie. His family also included several other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Reuben is also survived by his sisters, Corrine Lemaster and husband Richard; Helen Grove; and his brother, Harold Locke and wife Alma. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Richard and wife Georgianna.

Family will receive friends at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, on Friday, Oct. 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Darlene Stouffer officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to SpiriTrust Lutheran Home Care & Hospice, 2700 Luther Dr., Chambersburg, PA 17202.
