Obituary for Barbara Keefer

Barbara Keefer
Barbara R. Tritle Keefer, formerly of Mercersburg, died May 15, 2017 at Providence Place, Chambersburg.
Born January 1, 1937 at Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Clarence B. and Emma K. Myers Tritle.
She was a graduate of James Buchanan High School (Mercersburg Division) Class of 1954, the last class to graduate from the old Mercersburg High School building. Barbara graduated from the former Chambersburg Business School after a standard two-year class. She returned for a third year of advanced book keeping in 1956.
After working part time for Steiger & Steiger Attorneys at Law, she started full time as secretary for the firm in the mid 60’s. She retired in 2002 as office manager with 33 years of service.
Barb was always active in her church & community. After joining First United Methodist Church, of Mercersburg in 1956, she sang in the choir for many years, served as board secretary, finance committee, library committee and the original computer committee when the system was installed for the church.
Charter member of Buchanan Lioness Club where she served as its third president, was secretary for 10 years, and was a member of many committees. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Fun Dog Show in conjunction with the annual Strawberry Festival. Barb also served for many years on the board of directors and received the Lioness of the Year award.
Barb was only the third woman to be appointed to the Board of Associates of First National Bank of Mercersburg, now known as First Community Bank. After volunteering to help deliver meals for Meals on Wheels program it wasn’t long till she started a 10 year stretch as president.
When the MMP & W Ambulance & associated committees came into being in the mid 60’s, she was in the first class of trained EMTS. Barb was one of the first members to sign up for the Mercersburg Sportsmen’s Auxiliary when it was formed in the 60’s. She served on many committees & the board of directors.
She married H. Ronald Keefer on June 24, 1956, at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Reverend Emmert Colestock officiating. In addition to her husband of 60 years, she is survived by a son Michael R. (Cathy) Keefer of Clarion, PA, a grandson, Travis R. (Caitlyn) Keefer of San Marco, TX. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a son, Douglas R. Keefer, who died March 8, 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM May 19th at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg, with Reverend Michael Baughman officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
Viewing 6 to 8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
