Obituary for Harold Nichols

Harold Nichols
Harold Edwin Nichols, 71
September 9, 1945 – April 22, 2017
Harold Edwin Nichols of Mercersburg, PA passed away suddenly on April 22, 2017. He was born in Washington County to the late Elmer and Grace Mowen Nichols.

Harold was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War.

He was a retired salesman whose specialties included oriental rugs, floor covering and furniture.

He is survived by his son David Nichols of Fort Loudon, PA, his sister Mary Loretta Nichols Rhyne and brother John P. Nichols, both of Hagerstown, MD, and his former wife and David’s mother Rachel Nichols of Hagerstown, MD. Also surviving are many cousins, nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Dick and Roy, and sisters Ruth, Doris, Susie and Linda.

Family came first with Harold and he was devoted to the large Nichols clan and his in-laws. Later in life, he was often the planning force behind family gatherings. His son was the light of his life and they spent many hours together in scouting, fishing, and pursuing the many hobbies they shared including coin collecting and antiquing. He was a voracious reader with a special love for American history. For the past several years Harold voluntarily helped with the care of the horses at South Lawn Stables in Mercersburg, much to the gratitude of owner and friend Janet Hawbaker. This was a reflection of his love for animals and the care he was continuing to give his cats.

Harold will be remembered as a superb salesman; one who put his customers’ needs first and took time to build rapport. This was not surprising as he was a fine conversationalist and at ease in nearly any situation.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM Monday May 1, 2017 at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg, with Rabbi Ari Plost officiating. Visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A private ceremony for his remains will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Harold’s memory may be made to the Fendrick Library, 20 N. Main St., Mercersburg, PA 17236.
